ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS AT THE AMINI SITE (12 DU 323A), DUBOIS COUNTY,
INDIANA
Archaeological excavations conducted at the Amini Site (12 Du 323A)
in Dubois County, Indiana, identified a well developed and extensive
midden. Materials recovered include chert tools, blanks, abortions
and debitage, hardstone tools and bone pins, as well as burnt sandstone,
carbonized floral and faunal remains and human interments. Although
multicomponent, the midden and much of the associated cultural material
is of Late Archaic origin, dated by a single radiocarbon determination
at 5000 B.P. In addition to providing settlement-subsistence information
useful for reconstructing the Late Archaic system(s) of adaptation in
the Upper Patoka Valley, materials from the site may play an important
role in the development of a Middle-Late Archaic phase sequence for
southwestern Indiana.
