CULTURAL RESOURCES AND COAL MINING; AN UPDATE


There has always been a precarious balance between the needs of industry and development and the rapidly disappearing cultural resources. For the last five years, the regulations dealing with cultural resources have been severly weighted in favor of the coal industry. On September 22, 1922, new regulations were adopted by the Natural Resources Commission and submitted to the Office of Surface Mining for final approval. This paper reviews the changes in language and responsibilities, potential problems and emphasizes the need for cooperation in the archaeological community to address the concerns inherent in cultural resources.
