Human Burials

A portion of one human burial feature was encountered during the excavations at the Clampitt site. Burial feature no.l (BF-1) was a plow- disturbed, adult terment which was located along the south wall of Unit X (Figures 13c and 29). In compliance with State law, notification of this discovery was made to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology. After consultation with Division officials, the decision was made to recover the human remains that were exposed in Unit X.

The disturbed remains that comprised Burial Feature 1 were first encountered at 3.0 cm below the surface. Upon further excavation, additional bone fragments were found to extended below the base of the plowzone to a maximum depth of about 40 cm. The faint outline of a basin- shaped burial pit was visible in the south wall profile of Unit X (Figure29). The disturbed nature of the skeleton prohibited a determination of original burial position or orientation. A complete groundstone mano was the only artifact found in association with this feature ( Plate 4 ). The remainder of the burial appeared to extend into the south wall of Unit X, but was not recovered.

A small number of human remains were found in several areas of the site during excavation, and most came from disturbed (i.e. plowzone) contexts. One notable exception was the recovery of the right half of an adult mandible and a distal humerus fragment from the upper levels of feature 64. These bones appear to have been included as refuse in the pit fill and were not the remains of a deliberate burial. A complete list of human bone remains from the excavations is given in Appendix C.
