THE OHIO VALLEY-GREAT LAKES ETHNOHISTORY ARCHIVES: THE MIAMI COLLECTION
It is noted that the following work from the Miami Archives should be read and considered within the historical context in which it was composed and printed. The opinions expressed and the language used do not reflect the opinions or standards of the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, but are, rather, indicative of thought in that historical moment during which the document was published.

Longueuil to Rouille

(August 18, 1752)

Longueuil in: Archives Nationales, Ministere
des Colonies, C11A 98:350 and in
Pease and Jenison, French
Series,
III, pp. 652-653.

pp. 652, 653.

(page 652)

The situation of our affairs on the side of Detroit became every day more annoying, and by a multiplication of evils I was under the hard necessity of giving up for want of provisions the project which I had formed to avenge the death of our French and to bring back our rebels. All the commandants confirmed to me the conspiracy against the French, and I could apply no remedy to it. Happily a party of about 250 Indians of Mackinac has attacked the fort of La Demoiselle, who is dead, and killed about twenty-six, and the others have asked pardon. It is asserted that the chiefs of this party are to come down to Montreal. M. the general will talk with them and I hope he will reestablish tranquillity in the most threatened regions. I desire it very sincerely as a good citizen and as a good servant of the king.

I am with very profound respect, Monseigneur,

Your very humble and very obedient servant,

LONGUEUIL

I add, Monseigneur, that in the number of Indians killed there were six English traders whose storehouse has been pillaged by our Indians, who killed two of them. Our news is not yet detailed.
