Letter to Gage

(Detroit, April 19, 1763)

Gladwin, Harry in: Gage Papers,
American Series, vol. 9,
Clements Library.

Detroit April the 19th 1763

Sir

I wrote you a long letter last Decr and inclosed one for Colonel Wilmot, I sent it by Mr Farguharson.

I take this occasion, Sir, to congratulate you on the Cessation of Arms; I hope it will be a prelude to an honorable peace, so much desired by every lover of his Country.

The Six Nations, Shawans, and Delawar Indians, are very ill disposed, and are trying to stir up the Indians this way to do mischief, but I believe without effect; The belt they sent to the Meimie Indians, was delivered up by the Chiefs of the Nation, to the Commandant of that post; He sent it to me, and I shall forward it to the general by this conveyance-

A fire happened at St Marys last Decr, which consumed the Barracks, provisions, and a Curtain of the Fort; This accident obliged the Garrison to abandon it, and go to Michillimackinac; I fear that post will be distressed for provisions, before the supply (which I sent the 10th instant) reaches them.

I desire you will present my humble respect to Mrs Gage. I have the honor to be, with the utmost Respect

Sir

  Your most

    humble Servant

    Henry Gladwin
