THE OHIO VALLEY-GREAT LAKES ETHNOHISTORY
ARCHIVES: THE MIAMI COLLECTION
It is noted that the following work from the Miami Archives should be read and
considered within the historical context in which it was composed and printed.
The opinions expressed and the language used do not reflect the opinions or
standards of the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, but are, rather,
indicative of thought in that historical moment during which the document was
published.

Chevalier, Louis, (Enclosed in
Gladwin
to Gage), in: Gage Papers, American
Series, William L. Clements Library.
Sir,
I take the liberty of writing you to inform you of what has happened here. Four Loup [Delawares] have arrived here from La belle Riviere [Ohio] with six Belts, of which [Luyana?] there is one an arm and a cubit long and sixteen beads wide that is to renew their true alliance and to have but one heart and to sustain one another and all who call themselves savage. Two are to run from the side of the bay to invite them to assemble together and the War Belt they have given the last to invite them all to strike, the Pous [Potawatamies] accepted with a good heart and sang the war song with great joy.
The Mie [Miamis] and all those who were here have accepted the same thing and have all sung. The season being too far advanced, they have delayed action until this spring. They leave to reassemble together at the beginning of April to go find them, and the same Loups [Delawares] count on coming first off in the spring. There has arrived here November 16 a messenger form the Illinois therefore Monsieur de Neyon has sent his word for the Pous [Potawatomies] of this place and the Outaeouacs [Ottawas] and Sauteus [Chippewas] of Michillimackinac to commit themselves to make peace. I am sending you a copy of it. There is a belt and a calumet entirely of glass for the Sauteus [Chippewas] and Outaeouacs [Ottawas] of Michillimackinac. As soon as I hear that the French who come to The Grand River have arrived there, I will hold them. I have not failed to explain it to them and to all the Savages who come to the fort and even the Pous [Potawatomies] who have come from your post. I have explained to them insofar as I am able that this news means the failure of their design if they pursue it, or if it continues I will make it possible for you to be informed of it. This is the truth that I write you here, on which you can count.
