THE OHIO VALLEY-GREAT LAKES ETHNOHISTORY ARCHIVES: THE MIAMI COLLECTION
It is noted that the following work from the Miami Archives should be read and considered within the historical context in which it was composed and printed. The opinions expressed and the language used do not reflect the opinions or standards of the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, but are, rather, indicative of thought in that historical moment during which the document was published.

L. Clements Library.

Septr 2nd 1764 La Prairie des Mascoutins farther Village of Ottawas

Sir-

Washenawe having receiv'd us very kindly into his Cabin I beg leave to recommend him to your favor his prejudices against us are very great He ask'd me this morning after having made me some reproaches why you were desirous of seeing the Indians at Detroit and whether you intended to cover them he said he was almost naked that he intended to go to Detroit and hop'd that I woud give him a Letter as I had done to Attawang. I am certain Sir that a few presents to the Chiefs cannot but have a good effect kind treatment will infallibly open a way into the Illinois Country. The Navigation this way is utterly impossible nothing but Canoes can pass at present with great difficulty and in case of opposition I think it impracticable. I hope you will approve of what has been done. Necessity has no Law. Maisonvielle if he can get leave to go to Detroit can inform you of my proceedings and the reason of them I hope to make a long journey this day as we have good water and no Villages in our way till we get to the Miamis forty five Leagues from this place

I have the Honor to be &c
Thos Morris
