THE OHIO VALLEY-GREAT LAKES ETHNOHISTORY
ARCHIVES: THE MIAMI COLLECTION
It is noted that the following work from the Miami Archives should be read and
considered within the historical context in which it was composed and printed.
The opinions expressed and the language used do not reflect the opinions or
standards of the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, but are, rather,
indicative of thought in that historical moment during which the document was
published.

GENERAL HALDIMAND TO SECRETARY ROBINSON
(Extract)
|
Quebec 28th July, 1778. |
Since my arrival here Bills have been presented me, from Detroit for 30, 297.7.5 1/2 New York curr'y, as these were expenses incurred before my time. I applied to Sir Guy Carleton for an explanation of the matter and you have enclosed, copies of the letters that passed upon the occasion, the expense I own at first appeared to me heavy, upon consideration however upon the number of Indians collected by Lieut. Govr. Hamilton at the settlement. I do not think it extraordinary, there is an absolute necessity of keeping these People in good Humor, and 'tis not a little will do it.
I have the pleasure of informing you of the safe arrival of the "Howe" victualler from Cork, by whom I received your letter of the 28th of April, she arrived the 25th Inst, & in her passage beat off one of the American Privateers.
