THE OHIO VALLEY-GREAT LAKES ETHNOHISTORY ARCHIVES: THE MIAMI COLLECTION
It is noted that the following work from the Miami Archives should be read and considered within the historical context in which it was composed and printed. The opinions expressed and the language used do not reflect the opinions or standards of the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, but are, rather, indicative of thought in that historical moment during which the document was published.

Hamilton to Carleton

(August 11, 1778)

Hamilton, Henry in: Halsimand
Papers.,
[B 122, p. 118],
and in
Michigan Hist.
Colls.,
vol. 9,
pp. 460-461.

pp. 460, 461.

(page 460)

I yesterday sent away Monsr de Celoron with Belts and Speeches for the Miamis & Oubash Indians & a particular order to have 4 Iron Cannon which are at St. Vincennes spiked and Trunnions knocked off, for if they thought of fortifying themselves there, the very name of Cannon would perhaps deter the Indians from attacking them.

In my Letter of the 8th Instant, I have taken the liberty to mention to your Excellency and Expense that must necessarily attend the supporting the Oubash Indians, & how expedient it must be in case of rupture with the (page 461) Spaniards to keep frontier Indians in good temper, who will no doubt be courted by the Spaniards.

Their deputies who were here lately & took up the axe were well pleased with their Reception & promised to act with vigor against the Rebels.
