THE OHIO VALLEY-GREAT LAKES ETHNOHISTORY ARCHIVES: THE MIAMI COLLECTION
It is noted that the following work from the Miami Archives should be read and considered within the historical context in which it was composed and printed. The opinions expressed and the language used do not reflect the opinions or standards of the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, but are, rather, indicative of thought in that historical moment during which the document was published.

Vaudreuil to Maurepas

(March 15, 1747)

Vaudreuil in: Archives Nationales, Ministere des
Colonies, C13A 31:17 and in Illinois Historical
Collections,
French Series, vol. III,
(Extract), pp. 8-11.

pp. 8, 9, 10.

(page 8)

The disputes which had arisen between the Choctaw, the Abihka, Talapoosa, and the Kawita were ended soon after. I thought I could do nothing more advantageous for the progress of the colony than maintaining the peace and union among these allied tribes to which I shall always particularly apply myself. Moreover, as it is no less essential to make the English abandon the ideas they have always had of expanding at the expense of this colony, I have omitted nothing to make enemies for them among these tribes; but I have never been able to succeed with the Alibamu who always maintain a strict neutrality. I have made good use of the dissensions which had arisen between them and the Indians of the Wabash and Ohio rivers as well as the (page 9) Shawnee in order to induce all these Indians to make raids on their settlements. Up to now I do not know what success I have had as since that time I have received no news from the Illinois. . . .

I do not know what will be the success of the threats I have had made to the Illinois to cut off their presents if they continue to remain inactive and to give us as the sole proofs of (page 10) their friendship, mere promises to behave better to us in the future. When I have received information as to this I shall, Monseigneur, have the honor to communicate it to you and to give you and account of the course that I shall think it most proper to adopt along with M. de Bertet respecting these tribes.
